This book. Deserves five stars. Fans of dystopian fiction, if you're searching for another thrilling read of that genre, look no further than Black Tiger by Sara Baysinger! It's set in a fascinating futuristic world, akin to the DIVERGENT series, but unique in its own ways. Sixteen-year-old Ember Carter questions the ways of the government of Ky, (once known as Kentucky), but she can hardly speak out about it, because outside her home in the Garden, Defenders prowl, arresting anyone for words against the chief.
So as Career Day approaches, Ember stubbornly holds on to optimism, hoping that somehow she'll be chosen as a Farmer, and life will stay the same.
But she is Ember. And embers are meant to start fires.
Oh, how I love dystopian! After discovering Christian dystopian books, such as Nadine Brandes's OUT OF TIME series, I am constantly on the look out for more. And Black Tiger did not disappoint! The writing was fantastic - the words just grabbed a hold of me; pulled me in. It was so easy and intriguingly enjoyable to read. This book kept me on the edge of my seat, with surprising twists and turns. I thought the plot was great, having you wondering throughout the book ... breathless at the climax ... satisfied at the ending ... yet dying for Book Two! Very well done, Sara Baysinger! I loved this novel!
Something about Ember struck me as different from the mainstream fiction YA characters. She was more feeling; more soft inside. She was a blend of fieriness and fear. Determination and vulnerability. Anger and sensitivity. I really liked her, and look forward to reading the rest of her story!
Forest was first introduced as every YA hero seems to be. Breathtakingly handsome. (haha). I like him, but at the same time, I'm not sure I like him. (view spoiler)
Don't ask me why, but Rain is my favorite character. He came across as very real somehow; mysterious, but real. Passionate. Perhaps torn inside. Just a very complex character. I am really, really, really intrigued to see what happens next with him.
The romance-y stuff got a little frustrating for me, personally at times. But I'm very interested to see where things go in the next book!
The black tigers. EEEEE! They were simultaneously thrilling and terrifying. I literally felt the dread of them rushing through my veins.
Yes, the action, the thrills, the sheer adventure! There were royal balls, and there were prisons. Farmland holding apple trees and poor folk, and wealthy cities full of the powerful and proud. The characters were amazing. Intriguing. Black Tiger had/has me captivated.
The budding faith theme has my rapt attention. I'm excited to watch these characters discover their Creator. One quote I loved: "You are the Garden. God is the Sower."
A few cautions. I do recommend this book to about 18 and up, depending on what you're used of reading. There was a bit of mild language, and one or two crude phrases. Some things are mentioned and scenes described that are not suitable for a younger audience; (view spoiler). Also, the majority of the people of Ky have drinking habits that were a little uncomfortable for me. So yes, some of the content in Black Tiger was edgy, and demands a mature audience.
However, most of the characters in this book don't know God (yet); but even so, still see that what Ky calls "acceptable" and "entertainment" is truly evil and corrupt.
Some of the characters are confusing, but you have to keep reading to understand their actions.
I cannot wait for the second book to the BLACK TIGER series! Enthralling! Can hardly wait to see what's going to happen next! Ember, Rain, Forest, Elijah, and Jonah are on my mind and I'm thoroughly intrigued!
For those who love dystopian, Sara Baysinger has written a work of fiction that you do not want to miss!
(And isn't that cover fabulous? I need to get this book on my bookshelf!)

Sara Baysinger's first release is a thing of beauty. She brings us characters that grab your emotions and heart while the story is captivating and thought provoking. She does a masterful job of keeping you from putting the book down. It is entertaining, thrilling, and emotionally enthralling.
The spiritual undertones are just right. Not overbearing like some books can be, but a balance of obvious references and parallels that leave it to your imagination for your own interpreting. Even with these undertones it doesn't stop to shy away from what the reality of a dystopian future would look like with violence, abuse, and oppression. Sara makes the world of Ky come to life. From the descriptions of the characters to the imagery of a church building, she paints the story for you.
Highly recommend this book. It gives you character development, detailed imagery, and a strong story line.
Another solid addition to the YA dystopian genre. Plot and setting are nicely done. I enjoyed all of the characterization, although sometimes it drove me nuts at the same time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The fact that I personally wanted to injure at least two of the characters at any given moment just means I care. And caring is good! In this love triangle, I have to say I most rooted for the two guys to get over their differences with each other, team up, and take on the Big Problems. Rain and Forest really intrigued me, and I look forward to their growth. As for Ember, well-written, but she's in the "I know nothing and I'm being constantly manipulated" part of the YA main character arc, which is entirely understandable, but is also a little frustrating. The fact that no one seems to tell her anything doesn't help. I'm curious to see what the next book holds! Oh, and I didn't entirely understand WHY black tigers, but that was quickly overshadowed by BECAUSE BLACK TIGERS. Great descriptions of them.
You wouldn't know this was Sara Baysinger's first novel. (And can I say, that cover!) The way she weaves such striking imagery into the story, you'd expect to find her a seasoned author. If you enjoy the lyrical writing style of Tahereh Mafi, or the intensity of The Hunger Games, than you'll likely enjoy black tiger!
black tiger is a remarkable story, full of twists and turns that at some points leave you breathless. Though at times quite brutal, Ember's journey toward the truth - of her society and of her own life - draws you in. (I read this 57 chapter book in a day, if that tells you anything!) Ky is a harsh land of extremes. There are moments when the sheer honesty of it makes you want to look away. But time and each progressing chapter read exposes deeper layers and gems of wisdom. The underlying messages will stick with the reader long after the book is closed.
The characters are realistic and vivid. I could easily imagine each one. Ember's struggle to know who to trust is still MY struggle after finishing the book! Forest or Rain or Walker... I'm still not sure! Baysinger left enough unanswered questions and loose strings that I'm eager to read the next book!
There were a few minor details that were too much for me. But NOTHING that takes away from the worthiness of this book. I won't even list them, because they are so minor in the scheme of things and I want to you make up your own mind. We all have our personal preferences, but I'm glad that I read this book and I'm happy to recommend it! For these reasons I'm giving it 4/5 stars.
