I think this book is history that is simple to absorb. Yes, it is fictional, but it tells a story that gives a balanced view of the troublesome period of Reconstruction. It is actually about how two young kids got caught up in the Klan. That would have been very easy to do given the plight of their region. I bought this book for my grandson because he had asked why he could not have a Confederate flag as his friends have one. I am not certain he will get around to reading it as school just started, but I read a good bit of it and I think it will answer some of his questions on a level he can understand. Maybe he can use it for a book report. It says ages 11 and up. It will not be difficult for a 14 year old to understand.

We are still reading this book, but so far the story has sucked us in (adult, 11 yr old, 8 yr. old). It is particularly interesting as it takes place not far from where we live and we can see the places in our minds as we are reading.
This is a great book to show children the difficult decisions people had to make during the Reconstructionist Period. It also shows them the importance of being an upstander to do what is morally right.
This was awesome! I love this book. It was a great book to introduce readers to KKK. Great historical fiction read.
This is a great book for young people to understand the true emotions felt after the Civil War and reactions of people at that time. It is very well written and enjoyable for any age.
I really liked this book! I was transported back in time to Richmond in 1867, and to a mentality that is so radically different from 2014. Yet I was able to relate to each of the characters and their struggles as if they were my neighbors. At various times I was terrified, enraged, and relieved. It made me think about injustice and about how far we have come (or not). It's so nice to see a book for young adults that is not trendy and silly and shallow. Highly recommended.
I bought this as a book, thinking my 12-year-old granddaughter might like it for Christmas. And I discovered, to my surprise, that I'D like it for Christmas! What a fascinating story. It began slowly for this reader, because of the writing style (short, clipped sentences). But I soon found myself in the head of 14-year-old Shad, feeling and seeing what he experienced following the war that had decimated Richmond and much of the South. Whom was he to trust, now that his Daddy was dead? Would Daddy have been proud of his decisions? He understood loyalty to family, but at what cost? Historical novels always give a reader insight and new facts, and this novel does not disappoint.

Author Westrick has obviously researched carefully to ensure that her readers will finish reading, wanting to learn more about Shad, his brother Jeremiah, his mother and granddaddy, Miz Perkinson and his "new friends," and the "brothers" he has pledged to obey.

Westrick tells a compelling story of the post-Civil War era in Richmond and the complexities of emotions and allegiances its citizens faced. Living in Richmond now a hundred and fifty years after this time, I know that the issues raised in this book have not been been resolved here or, for that matter, anywhere. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain an understanding of how racism festers in the right environment and how relationships across difference can bring us closer to acceptance. Brotherhood is set in an historical place and time but one that has much resonance with today.
