I picked up my first copy for 29 cents at a local used store in 7th grade. It was a book I read over and over, at home and on the bus. My copy was taped together and I knew I needed a new copy. I still love this book. I always wish we could have got a sequel and seen what happened to deenie in the future. Deenie is a beautiful young girl whose mother wants her to be a model. Deenie just wants to be a cheerleader and get her crush's attention. Instead she gets the gym teacher's attention because of her spine. The book has great descriptions and good info. You sympathize with deenie. Her mother sees her as a beauty and her sister as a brain, not as people. It's a great story, one I can still read again and again.

I read this book 30 years ago and archived it in my brain. A couple years ago my daughter was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis . Only then did it all come rushing back to me. This is a good book but I think moreso for parents to see a glimpse of what their child might be going through Or for friends of patients with scolisis. My daughter couldn't relate to Deenie but this is 30+years later.
Only realistic book I've come across that deals with what it's like growing up with Scoliosis. Not everyone's experiences are the same, but some things are universal; like what it's like to be different physically - going through changes, being akward and having to deal with what it's like being different.
I was 8 years old when I was diagnosed with scolosis. I wore a Milwaukee brace for several years and then wore a low profile brace until I was 17. I was recommended this book shortly after my diagnosis by an adult member of my church who was about to have back surgery for his scolosis. I look forward to reading it again, as I have memories of how it helped me through those first years.
Judy Blume has written another outstanding novel about a fairly common condition, namely scoliosis, a spinal curvature, and Deenie, the teenager who finds she needs to change her life because of her diagnosis. No surgery, but a body cast encase Deenie, who's Mom is upset because she's been planning the future around Deenie, the "pretty one" becoming a model. Deenie's sister, "the smart one," also has issues with the limited view assigned by the mother. However, with the help of teachers, friends, and sisters, they deal with the challenge. Not only is the book instructive, but encouraging. I highly recommend it to parents and teachers, anyone who works with teens.
As a young girl Judy Blume was my favorite author. I still remember reading "Are you there God? It's me Margaret" like it was yesterday.

My daughter was recently diagnosed with scoliosis and will be getting her brace this week. I heard about this book but also heard it had a few adult things in it so I wanted to read it for myself first to see what it was about before having her read it.

I'm glad I read it for a few reasons mostly because I think it helped me see the brace from her point of view. The sexual content was a bit much, however, it was normal for that age. As a mom you don't want to think your daughter is having those thoughts, but thinking back as a child yourself, you know she probably is.

All together it was a good read and I loved the explanation of the process of getting the brace and what is expected.

Deenie, a seventh grader, wants to be a cheerleader. Her mom wants Deenie to be a model. Those dreams are dashed when she's diagnosed with scoliosis. Now she has to wear s brace and her life is over, or so she believes.

First published in 1973 when I was YA age, DEENIE felt fresh and new. The rerelease, though still relatable and interesting, feels a bit stale. I'll bet most YA readers have never heard of looking something up in Encyclopedia Brittanica and will wonder why Deenie didn't just google her condition. Deenie felt flat, as I would expect for a girl who doesn't want to model, is disappointed at nor making cheerleader and then diagnosed with a life altering condition. Her mother and Aunt Rae were stereotypical stage mothers, though I loved her father and sister.

DEENIE will appeal to any teen experiencing a medical problem that makes her feel different from her peers.
I'm a big fan of Ms Blume's work. Books like <cite>Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret</cite> and <cite>Then Again, Maybe I Won't</cite> were a huge part of my adolescence. So when <cite>Gilmore Girls</cite> revealed to me that there was a Judy Blume book I hadn't read, I ran out and grabbed it right up.

And... I was a little disappointed. This felt to me like the first third of a really good book, not a complete work. Storylines are started that get dropped, opportunities are missed, and in all, it feels... incomplete. Maybe it's because I'm no longer in the target audience, but it just feels to me like this is not Ms Blume's best work.
