And we were going along so fine, with most of my gripes of the previous books fixed...Bay 21 is open to air. AIR? "AIR in space" OMG
How about?: "Bay 21 lost Air Integrity", "Bay 21 is open to Vacuum"
Hmmm! He gets it right a few chapters later, But I recommend that the Design team work on the shielding. This was the second battle that Bay 21 lost integrity.
Great improvement in representing non-verbal dialog, but still more work is needed on word choices:
Metals and Decorations (2 places). I have Navy Medals (Awards and Decorations. A medal can be either. Many Medals are made from metal.)
Cringe worthy: 'I shuttered at the thought' (and 2 other places) . 'shuddered' use correctly in 2 additional places
Confusion time again: When a Riss transfers to a Human Host, the Gorillai host dies. Yet may times, the Humans claim they can just give up their Riss. 'Spin' by the program directors? Failing to mention the 'Die' part!

The Riss Survival Book III in the Riss Series eBook C R Daems Reviews
If you like kick-ass strong females leads (aka, Honor, Jenetta Carver, Ia, etc,)Layda Reese is the new girl in town.
I'am a Military Sci-Fi fanatic since I started reading Weber and finding new Heroines can get tough, but new jewels come along eventually and I feel this is one. If space battles and military intrgue spark your interest read this book, personally I hope it will be a long series.
One issue I have is the editing (lots of typos), so for readers that get bent out of shape if things aren't perfect ,keep shopping.
I gave book 2 only 4 stars because of said problem and was going to do the same here, but the series as a whole is entertaining enough for a 5 star rating. I'll be buying book 4 when it comes out.
I don't know what it is, but I think I'm almost addicted to this author. I don't buy male authors any more and I certainly like more sex in a book, but something about the rhythmic story concepts and weighting lulls me into buying more! The books have bad editing and he often forgets whose male or female from the last book, but I feel 'full' when I've finished reading them !
This series (currently - mar 2013 - up to it's 3rd installment) is WELL worth your time. It presents a fresh idea for the main character and although the discrimination possibly feels a bit overdone here and there, it IS entirely believable given know human prejudice.
The backdrop is entirely believable and the universe actually seems to make economic sense in that the spaceships are of economically reasonable size (no huge fleets of superdreadnoughts here).
The change in plot line in the 3rd book seems a but coincidental and possibly contrived but coincidences are what makes life and if the author can avoid to many of these in the future (and he/she seems well capable) it's no more than a minor quibble.
I this came up in your recommendations list it is quite probably well worth your time and a couple of bucks.
Ok, I'm hooked. I've read the three novels in this series back to back over the last few days. This is military science fiction, which means the strategy is the main focus. The author creates some interesting populations and forces them to work together against a common foe. As is common in this genre there are a lot of characters we know in name only and for a brief time. The main characters are more fleshed out, but this is still a conflict driven series.
Accepting the genre for what it is is key to enjoying the series. And I'm enjoying it very much!
One negative is the editing. This book had many more glaring mistakes than the first two -- and they weren't clean. A lot of word substitution problems, which means the reader has to stop and figure out what word should be there. I think the author may be in too big a rush to publish, and needs to take the time -- or have someone else take the time -- to do one final edit. That said, I want number four right now!
I've been enjoying this series a lot. This book got a bit slow for a while but if picked up steam and finished well. My biggest problem with #3 is the spelling and grammar mistakes. As an occasional copy editor I can't help but notice them. By midway through the book they happen at least every other page. It was distracting for me. His collaborations with the other author whose name I've forgotten are really well written. I'd like to see this book properly proof read. Then I'd enjoy it more. I may not go on to #4. But I might! Not today. The other books demanded their immediate sequels. This one does not for me.
Update. OK. I waited a few hours and got over my snit about the proofing and bought #4, which I am enjoying immensely! Still needs proofing. Some confusion re pronouns too, as "he" and "she" get interchanged occasionally, leading to some double takes on my part. Still enjoyable.
I enjoyed this book and I've read it twice. I like the characters, there were few or no low points in the plot. The tactical logic in this series is a bit weak but it's not bad.
There are some tech issues (e.g. radar is light speed based but they don't talk about light lag at all) but this is not a tech based Sci-Fi; it's more about the story under a given set of conditions. Accept the givens and you can enjoy the book.
If you liked the past books in this series you should like this one.
It does have some typos that do takeaway form the flow of the prose. I know proofing is very hard; I'm doing revisions on my master's thesis so I really do know. The typos are enough to sometimes make you a bit confused. Sometimes it's a number or kind error (5 here but 6 there etc. strikers/sharks/ghosts) sometimes gender, sometimes verb conjugation.
The structure of the book is a bit odd. It felt a bit more like a novella and then part one of the (very connected) next book. Al told it was a good length but I would have liked to have the remained of this story in the book. I guess we'll have to wait for the next one. The other books in the series were all made of several sorter arcs but each book felt more like more of a singular entity to me.
I will buy the next book once it is released (hopefully soon?)
Happy reading,
Nick
